Introduction to Appendix 3 - 1857 Griffith's Lists - Distribution by Parish and townland - Parish and Townland maps.
Appendix 3.
Early Donegal records
of the McGlynn families
Appendix 3
When in 1602 the small sept of the McGlynns arrive in Donegal, it is to a heavily forested river valley with stags, pine martins, wolves, and wood-kerns roaming the glen. Donegal at this time is the least populated, and wild, part of the island. The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are lost to us, with the plantation of 1610 and the loss of records. There are probably church records that may fill in some of the inter-relationships in the latter part of the eighteenth century, but it is not till the Griffiths Lists of 1857 that we get a reasonable picture. The Griffiths Valuation names only the house-holder, not the number of occupants.
I use all variations of McGlynn, be it McGlinn, McGlin, or McLynn because it is not until we have a generation who can read and write that we formalise the spelling. There are even variations in the 1900s of families changing from one spelling to another, and sometimes one first name to another.
The Griffiths Lists show a total of 257 McGlynns having property in

The numbers of women holding the land gives an indication of length of tenure and, with the long leases, can place these families in these townlands in the early 1800s or before. It also highlights; as it does in the 1901 Census; the problem of sons inheriting property and being able to marry, a cause of migration in the following years.

The following distribution maps show the spread of McGlynn families in 1857 and give a complete picture of all Finn Valley McGlynn households in 1857. There was a distribution of land in the late 1860s but as yet I cannot give a date or reason. It is all more marginal land and may indicate sheep and cattle farming. The ages of the people living in these new farms in 1901, and their date of marriage, points to a land division in the 1860/70s.
